How not to get your map chewed in Nara?

I’ve always wanted to go to Nara because of two reasons. While the first one was to see all the temples I’ve heard so much about (and I’ll write a separate post about them), it’s the second reason which I’d like to show today. Deer!

I was a bit worried before going to Nara that we’ll miss them, that the deer will be in a different part of the park, that I couldn’t approach them and couldn’t take any pictures. It turned out that the worries were absolutely groundless. And it is NOT POSSIBLE to miss the deer while in Nara Park. It’s rather opposite – deer will find you and you’ll need to feed them (or your map or your jacket will be chewed instead 🙂

They will even look up the map to make sure they are in the most touristy spot possible to get the food (or your map) 🙂

As it turned out, the deer can not only chew your jacket, but also bike, kick, butt and knock you down – so pay attention when in park 🙂

And this is how one of the roads in the park looks like. Not possible to miss a deer. And if you want to have them all to yourself – it’s much better to visit the park earlier than we did. Because otherwise, you’ll need not only to avoid to be chewed by the deer but also to navigate through everyone else who came to see the deer or temples or both 🙂
